Handling Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can happen to anyone, young or old, and they may result from various situations, such as falls, sports injuries, or accidents. Here’s what you can do if you encounter a dental emergency before visiting our office:
For Severe Injuries:
- If you suspect a broken jaw or another life-threatening injury, prioritize your safety by visiting the nearest emergency room or seeking medical attention before dental treatment. Call 911 if needed.
Chipped or Fractured Teeth:
- In case of a chip, crack, or fracture, contact our office right away.
- If a portion of the tooth has broken off, gently rinse it with lukewarm water and bring it with you.
- Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes or until bleeding stops.
- Reduce swelling and pain by using a cold compress on the cheek over the affected area.
- You may use a topical pain reliever.
- Dental cement, available at most pharmacies, can be used to cover the affected area.
Dislodged or Loosened Teeth:
- Contact our office immediately to arrange a meeting with our dentists.
- Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the area to reduce swelling.
- A mild pain reliever can be used for discomfort.
Our dentists will carefully examine and reposition any dislodged or loosened teeth to restore stability. In cases where the tooth is still attached to blood vessels and nerves, a root canal may not be necessary. However, if the tooth does not heal, a root canal treatment may be recommended.
Avulsed (Knocked-Out) Teeth:
- If your tooth has been entirely knocked out, time is critical. Contact our office immediately.
- Rinse your mouth to remove blood or debris.
- Place a cold compress or ice pack on the cheek over the injury to reduce swelling.
- Handle the tooth by the crown (chewing surface), avoiding contact with the root.
- Rinse the tooth gently with water to clean it (do not use soap or chemicals).
- If possible, reinsert the tooth into the socket and gently bite down.
- Alternatively, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk, saline solution, your own saliva, a tooth preservation kit (available at most pharmacies), or water.
Lost Filling or Crown:
- If a crown or filling becomes loose due to injury or decay, contact our office for an appointment.
- Maintain the dental crown (if available) in a cool, safe place – it may be reattached.
- While awaiting your appointment, you can:
- Clean the crown and reattach it with dental cement (found at pharmacies).
- Apply clove oil to the tooth for pain relief.
Toothaches:
- Rinse your mouth to remove debris or floss between teeth to dislodge any trapped particles.
- If the toothache persists, contact our office for an appointment with our dentists.
Avoid placing aspirin on gums or teeth, as it can cause harm to oral tissues.
